I intend to build an empire, an empire of hope.
Powerful words coming from a small, sickly catholic nun, Francis Xavier Cabrini. Told in 1880 at 30 years of age that she had less than 2 years to live, she defied all odds (including the many male leaders who tried to stop her along the way because she was a woman) and went on to found 67 institutions around the world dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. It was the largest charitable empire the world had ever known. An accomplishment equal to that of Rockefeller, and all of her institutions were run by women.
“It’s a shame you’re a woman. You would have made an excellent man.” - were the words of the New York mayor to Cabrini. Her response: “O, no, Mr Mayor, Men could never do what we do!”
Not only is Cabrini a powerful must-watch movie, but the true story of a woman who did not let her frailty stop her from living out her calling.
“We can serve our weakness, or we can serve our purpose. Not both” (Cabrini).
